Janet Curley Cannon
Pillars of Society, 2011 - 2012
This work was inspired by the public debate that occurred after the summer riots of 2011 in London and elsewhere. With the economy in meltdown, major cities were ablaze with riots or occupied by protestors and there was repeated commentary about a weakening of social values and growing inequalities across many communities. Prominent public voices from politicians to religious leaders referred to these events as a breakdown of morality in our society. The work explores and reflects on the current state of our 'Pillars of Society' identified as Government, Business, Family, Religion, Education, the Arts, and Media/Communication, visually considering the concepts and conditions surrounding these institutions and the inherent values attached to each. It plays with the inter-related associations, and references both historical and contemporary contexts.
