I work predominantly in oil paint and acrylic, concerned with concepts of space within a two dimensional surface. I develop my ideas further through a crossover into sculpture, exploring notions of physicality in space. The three dimensional clay forms I create are closely informed by the paintings and vice versa. I am primarily concerned with the abstract qualities of space, colour and form. Through the compositions I intuitively arrange, I explore notions of movement and energy. I work in a direct manner inspired by firsthand experiences, sounds and images of the world. These in turn dictate the composition.
Born in Leeds Wendy Abbott studied fine art at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, under Richard Hamilton (1962-1967), where she was awarded a Hatton Scholarship (1966-1967). She then studied for an MFA at the University of Reading, under Terry Frost and Claude Rogers (1967-1969). After this she taught at Reading University and was a visiting lecturer at Leeds University, under Lawrence Gowing.
