Artist Statement

History and Approach I am a figurative artist whose career so far has taken two distinct forms. From 1969 to 1994/5 I painted landscape and still life - mainly in oils - working in Mid West France and England. I used a highly responsive approach to the world around me seeking colour in relation to movement, aiming to capture the changing elements, and completing work quickly - even frantically. By the mid 1990s I felt I had painted myself to a standstill, and needed to start afresh by relearning how to draw and studying human anatomy. I now paint and draw the human form, aiming to put down essential structure and form and to make an image breath. I am driven by the reward which comes from getting drawing RIGHT structurally and compositionally, which in turn unleashes the creativity and inspiration needed to put life and soul into a work. In this respect I am encouraged by Tai Chi teaching, an art stemming from the Sung dynasty of ancient China which offers life long learning of bodily structure, which - as one improves - leads to ever more flowing and strong movement. I use live models for reference as well as photographs and the developing painting or drawing, which may take months to complete.
