Kate Hammersley

Encompassing drawing, sculpture, performance and film, my practice questions the fluid intersections between humans, animals and landscapes across time. Rooted in my experience of growing up on a farm, I study the rhythms of life in motion and follow the paths of animal migrations reflecting on how these lines and their stories connect us.

This interest in the connectedness of things extends to collaborating with natural forces, materials and scientists where I work with states of in-betweenness. My process involves layering marks and materials so that objects hold a memory and shift between 2D and 3D. The structural limits of materials are tested and carefully mended as a reflection on the fragile nature of life itself. 

Since being selected for Sotheby’s International Young Art programme, I have exhibited nationally and internationally, including at the Royal Society of Sculptors, the Elizabeth Foundation New York, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and the London Art Fair.

My practice has been supported by three awards from Arts Council England and works are held in the National Contemporary Art Collection of Wales, the University of Oxford and private collections in the UK and overseas.
