Candice Jacobs has recently been working collaboratively with tradesmen, service industry staff and factory staff in the creation of her work, 'many of whom are not interested in Contemporary Art at all, which I like'1. For example, for her sound work 'Thank-you' (all works, 2008) Jacobs returned to the restaurant in the factory where she once worked, wearing a secret microphone to record all the 'thank-you's she spoke in a day which were then edited into one continuous stream of acquiescence.

The crane driver (on the construction site of a new-build gallery) of 'Crane Sculpture (Nottingham Contemporary)' employs his crane and materials to create sculptures, documenting them from his lofty cab using a mobile phone. 'Jail Bird' broadcasts birdsong

purchased on iTunes over tanoy speakers installed in a disused Police Station, reminiscent of similar experiments to control anti-social behaviour in public places through the playing of classical music.

With this body of work, and its use of found, random and readily available materials and technologies, Jacobs attempts to question various hierarchies, not least the value of an artist's creation and what indeed constitutes the fundamental essence itself that allows one to call themselves 'an artist' in the first place.
