Miranda Whall's work is simultaneously intimate while resonant of the collective vagaries of human experience and our inability to truly empathise with each other and with the natural and physical world around us. Whilst the content of her drawings and videos often appears sexually provocative or deeply confessional, she does this not for shock value but from a desire to highlight the often-undisclosed feelings we have around sex and our relationships with others.

In the ongoing series of videos, 'Marine Dialogues', various marine creatures go about their daily business oblivious to the artist, who regales them with a series of both humorous and melancholy monologues about all that is profane and profound in the plight and joy of being a human being.

Overwhelming the mute and unresponsive creatures, Whall exaggerates the impossibility of any meaningful dialogue, playing with the vain and futile pursuit of attempting to make connections between others and herself. Her work can be seen as a determined act of folly, aspiring for a greater understanding of herself and her position in the grand scheme of things. However, it is also an act of folly we are all engaged in to varying degrees of commitment and success.
